OPEN HUMBOLDT - Our mission for knowledge exchange with society

With OPEN HUMBOLDT, we have created a unique framework for establishing our university into a contact zone for science and society. With OPEN HUMBOLDT, we want to build bridges and open up discussion spaces for an exchange between science and society at eye level. Because society needs science and science needs society. By sharing knowledge in both directions we will be able to ask the right questions and overcome the multiple crises of our time.
Julia von Blumenthal, President of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

In its responsibility for research and education, Humboldt-Universität performs central tasks within society. This includes a close exchange between science and society as a bridge between the academic community and the public at local, regional and international level.

We understand knowledge exchange with society as an equal exchange, that offers space for questions, experience and knowledge from society and integrates these impulses into the university's work. Our aim is to learn from the various actors in society and to tackle pressing social issues together with civil society, culture and politics.

In doing so, we want to take as many different paths as possible to share expertise, knowledge and resources and to inform and inspire stakeholders beyond campus boundaries - in dialog at eye level and through active involvement in transdisciplinary research practice. With OPEN HUMBOLDT, we therefore promote a wide variety of formats to share knowledge and enable participation. In this way, we support social partners and researchers in finding the most suitable methods for them to get involved cooperatively.

The idea of OPEN HUMBOLDT thrives on the commitment of many and we are delighted to bring together diverse players from science and society:

For interested citizens

In participatory projects, scientists work together with citizens to research new issues. Sometimes these issues develop in a very practical way from everyday experience, sometimes it is about scientifically addressing the major global challenges of our time. You can find examples of joint activities and offers under “Projects and initiatives”.

For researchers and university members

We support researchers, students and staff across disciplines in shaping scientific issues in collaboration with society in order to enrich research and jointly contribute to overcoming social challenges.

To this end, we offer a range of advisory and training services for the implementation of knowledge exchange with society in research and teaching, provide support with funding opportunities and facilitate networking with other projects and social actors. With the OPEN HUMBOLDT Freiräume funding line, we enable researchers to invest more time in participatory projects. Get in touch with us to find out how we can support you:

Research should respond to the actual needs and realities in society. And this is precisely where I can learn a lot from non-university partners who deal with this on a daily basis.”
Gökce Yurdakul, whose project has been funded by the OPEN HUMBOLDT Freiräume in 2024

OPEN HUMBOLDT is an open initiative that thrives on diverse impulses, ideas and advice. A special Expert Circle, committed organizations and scientific partners support us with external know-how in the development of new formats and projects as well as the reflection and monitoring of existing activities.

"It is important and effective for a scientist to leave the ivory tower and include other perspectives and experiences in their own research. This is indeed exhausting and a very high effort. But if you have the aspiration to really leave something behind for society, it's [...] an extremely worthwhile endeavor."
Robert Arlinghaus, social ecologist and fisheries scientist, Communicator Award of the DFG 2020, member of the Open Humboldt Expert Circle
