Open Humboldt Freiräume

New edition: Open Humboldt Freiräume 2026/27

NEWS: The 2026/27 call offers two types of support: Professors and research staff from all disciplines at Humboldt-University can apply for funding either for a teaching reduction/teaching-buyout or for financing student research assistants to gain additional time or support for implementing a project with society. The application deadline is October 17th, 2025.

"Open Humboldt Freiräume" aims to promote multidirectional exchange between science and society. At its core is the idea that researchers need time and support to engage in dialogue with society beyond the university and to develop projects in collaboration with society partners.

The funded projects go beyond communicating or disseminating one’s own research; they aim to experiment with innovative and participatory forms of cooperation. The goal is, on the one hand, to make university knowledge available to address societal questions or current challenges, and on the other hand, to incorporate societal perspectives into one’s own research—thereby jointly initiating or advancing research processes with societal actors.

The programme is funded by the Berlin University Alliance.
