Monday Lecture at the Centre for British Studies | Northern Ireland after Brexit. Between the British and the European Union

This talk will examine the position of Northern Ireland in the UK after Brexit by considering four different dimensions of change. The first is an assessment of the current pressures on the 1998 Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, particularly in terms of British-Irish relations. The second is to examine what the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland means for the constitutional place in the UK and in the UK internal market. The third is the state of political unionism in Northern Ireland, in light of the flux experienced since the end of the transition period. And the fourth dimension is that of public opinion, particularly as it has evolved since 2016.

Katy Hayward is Professor of Political Sociology at Queen’s University Belfast and a Senior Fellow in the UK in a Changing Europe think-tank, where she leads a project on The Future and Status of Northern Ireland after Brexit.
